walls of flames. a wildfire in the sierra growing larger tonight and closing the main road from the bay area to yosemite. good evening everyone, i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. a wildfire burning east of groveland has closed east 20 the main road to yosemite park. we get the latest from ken

wayne. he's live near the front lines in the stanislaus national forest where fire crews have their hands full tonight, ken. >> reporter: frank and julie, we have a front row seat to the power and devastation of this fire. that is still burning out of control just outside of yosemite national park: you look over my shoulder, the flames are burning about a half mile to 3/4 mile away from us. fires generally lay down at night and that has been happening here but every once in a while we'll see what is called torching where individual pine trees or groups of trees will suddenly burst into flames and believe it or not in the middle of all that flame, the orange area that you see on the side of that mountain lies highway 120 and that road of course is closed. we want to show you some pictures from earlier this evening. these photos were shot about an hour ago so the intensity of the flames as they are burning even after the sun went down. as i mentioned fires generally

lay down at night. in this case there's still very intense flames burning 60, 80, perhaps 100 feet into the air even after nightfall. there's still about 200 firefighters working right now in the darkness trying to do what they can to bring this fire under control. it has been a very long day and it's bound to be a long night ahead. >> reporter: the flames are burning on both sides of lake road. this is cherry road the road that takes you the command center. >> we did come out to more accessible grounds that we were able to get a foothold and start making progress. >> reporter: yosemite park itself is not affected by the fire but tourists trying to get there can't get through highway 120.

huge flames are making passage impossible. people are being turned away because the fire has jumped the highway. >> rough, it's a kind of turn it over to god deal. there's nothing you can do. totally helpless. >> reporter: the fire has destroyed two homes and several outbuildings. >> my daughter has a home up there, and reportedly, their place burned up. >> reporter: about 60 people have been evacuated and a shelter has been set up at the fairground in sonora. fire fighters say they want to throw more resources at this blaze but other fires burning across the west are also making demands. >> very challenging fires. we have multiple river drainage involved. we have a shortage of resources due to the fires in california and in the west in general. >> reporter: again, yosemite national park is not affected by this fire. these are live pictures again

of the flames continuing to burn out of control. we have been told that there's been some smoke over tayoga pass. maybe a little bit of smoke in yosemite valley but nothing that has bothered tourists that are there right now. and the park is over you just can't use highway 120 to get in there. the last count was that this fire has burned 10,170 acres that is as of 6:00 this morning. there will be another flight overnight early this morning using infrared imaging to determine the size of this fire. at 6:00 tomorrow morning, firefighters should have a better idea of exactly how big this fire is. certainly it's going to be much larger than 10,000 acres as it continues to burn with no containment at this point. there was some lightning in this area last night. we have not seen any light tonight. the cause of this fire is still unknown. could be lightning, but firefighters say right now they have not been able to determine the cause. and again, it's zero percent

containment. firefighters are still working the scene. ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now, several camps near yosemite have been evacuated as a precaution about 300 seniors left camp neither to return to san francisco. people also packed up and left the san jose family camp and the tualame camp. also in the area is camp tuanga a summer children's camp. the sheriff ordered anyone still there to leave the area for their own safety. and there are red flag warnings in parts of the northern california right now. here's how it looks you see the thunder and lightning cells in the west slope of the sierra nevada. lightning still occurring south of reno. there's lightning in the area. that's why there's a red flag warning in effect . stays in

effect because more thunderstorms possible not just in the mountains but perhaps here in the bay area. when we come back in 10 minutes we're going to talk about that chance of thunderstorms, a red flag warning. coastal flag is pretty thick. i'll be back here in 10 minutes. a smoke grenade being used in a military training exercise is what sparked a large grass fire in dublin this afternoon. the flames rushed across 100 acres of dry brush. it's located near the santa rita jail. the fire started at 1:30 this afternoon and was under control about three hours later. firefighters got help. and stay with us for continuing coverage at 10:20, bill has tomorrow's bay area forecast and will tell you if firefighters are going to be getting any help.

at 10:45, his extended outlook including the change taking place for the weekend. dozens of students from city college in san francisco are holding a sit in at city hall outside of mayor ed lee's office. the students say they won't leave until they get a commitment from the mayor to help save their school. they want him to work on reversing a recent decision to withdraw the school's accreditation. that decision could lead to a loss of state aid and result in the closure of city college. >> we are demanding that ed lee take a public stand against the rogue accreditation agency. >> the mayor's office told us that saving the school is one of mayor lee's highest priorities and he plans to work with state officials and trustees to keep the college open. tonight we're hearing from the family of a bay area motorcyclists who was critically injured during last saturday's commute when he was hit by a hit-and-run drive.

that father of two is now paralyzed from the waist down. the highway patrol later arrested the man accused of hitting him. we go to amber lee who spoke to the victim's wife. >> reporter: the motorist was hit behind me. tonight his family is telling me they're struggling with what happened to his father. >> reporter: richards is seen her at the hospital with his wife. he suffers a broken back and severely damaged spinal cord. >> his chances of never walking again are slim to none. completely life altering really. it's a mixed emotion from confusion to anger to sadness. >> reporter: it was friday during the evening commute. fletcher was riding his motorcycle, heading home from work in south san francisco when a car struck him from behind. he told his family he pointed at his head. a signal to the driver of the

honda to watch out for motorcycles. but that gesture appeared to anger the driver. >> i can't believe it. i don't know. i wouldn't think that would ever happen to him. because he's so experienced, you know. >> reporter: the chp identified the hit-and-run driver as the registered owner of the honda. 32-year-old boing alcaro david. he got into an altercation with a chp officer a short while later and the officer shot him. fletcher's family says their focus is not on the driver but his father. they say he's a building inspector and the family's sole breadwinner, supporting his wife and children. >> i know we're going to get through it. we're not defeated by it. we're just struggling, we need a lot of help. >> reporter: fletcher wants to find the passing motorist who stayed with him until the ambulance arrived to thank him. the driver faces three felony charges including attempted murder.

amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. we've now learned the identity of a danville woman who was critically injured when she was hit by a suspected drunk driver. 53-year-old diana gregory was walking along camino talahara when she was hit. the driver identified as samuel herick also of danville was arrested in suspicion of dui. the mayor of campbell is circulating an online petition asking the fda to end its ban on gay men donating blood. tonight 18,000 people have joined the mayor calling for the change. we were there last month when mayor evan lowe sponsored a blood drive. as an openly gay man he was not allowed to donate. the fda adopted the ban in 1983 in an effort to prevent the spread of aids and hiv. lowe says the policy is dated. despite rigorous testing there's still a short window

where hiv can go undetected. a dog is recovering after being both shot with a pel let gun and either falling or jumping from a window. the owners of the dog didn't even realize it had been shot when he took him to the vet. >> reporter: a 40-foot jump from this window landed freddy, a chow mastiff mix in the animal hospital. pelvis knocked out of place. >> i've been sick since it happened he's been in the hospital right now and that's my guy. >> reporter: owner steve says his dog's routine has not changed for years and he could not understand why his nine year old gentle dog would make such a move, jumping from a three story window that's always kept open. >> i run to him, i kiss him. i see there's blood. i can't tell where the blood is

coming from. >> reporter: gunther says he assumed the injuries were from the fall. until the vet called and told him freddy had been shot with a pellet gun. >> i called the cops, because what else do you do, someone shot him. >> you want to be careful with wide open windows. >> reporter: investigators want somebody to come forward. >> somebody shot my dog on purpose. who does that? >> reporter: in san francisco, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. that 10-year-old boy from antioch who was mauled by a pit bull earlier this month is now back at home with his family tonight. this is a photo of hunter kilborne at his father's home playing a video game.

the mother says the boy is in good spirits. kilborne left the hospital yesterday. he was at a neighbor's home on august 11th when he was knocked down by one dog and mauled by a second pit bull. since then he's had two skin grafts and may face more surgery in the future. his mother says he hopes hunter will be able to return to school in about another month. guilty on four counts of murder. >> they were all young girls. >> why the brother of one of the victims says it's not enough and what he still wants from the convicted serial killer. three people shot at a bay area restaurant. tonight what we've uncovered about past trouble at that

the opening of the bay bridge is expected to be open. not before a closure of the entire span that will last five days. during those five days commuters all over the bay area can expect a lot heavier traffic and of course delays. cara liu is live and tells us what transit is doing to ease the commute a bit. >> reporter: we found out from transit officials which roadways are likely to be the most congested when the bay bridge shuts down eight days from today.

in park presidio to the golden gate bridge is expected to be one of the bay area's most congested roadways when the bay bridge shuts down overlabor day weekend. many drivers already have a game plan on how they will cope. >> i just planned out my schedule and not go over to the east bay. and i would just use the san mateo bridge or golden gate bridge and the richmond bridge. >> what am i going to do? i'm going to go to work three hours earlier. >> i didn't even know the bridge was closing down. but i will probably have practice so probably try to take an alternate route. >> reporter: in addition to 19,000 of you other areas likely to be congested include the san mateo bridge, the richmond san rafael bridge and between san quentin and the san francisco drake bridge. >> to keep traffic moving, and prevent back ups on to the

surface streets that's where we're going to be focusing. >> reporter: 511 has a map that you can check. caltrans will also be keeping tabs on the traffic from a central command center. >> people in the bay area have traditionally responded well. they've done so by planning ahead. >> reporter: the traffic data company working with 511.org predicts traffic will be the worse on thursdays and friday afternoon starting around 2:30 or 3:00. they expect the roads to be packed starting friday afternoon as the people return from the weekend traffic. cara liu. san francisco bay ferry managers are promising more service during the upcoming bay bridge closure. plans call for extra runs

between san francisco and oakland, alameda and vallejo. we got a look today at the finishing touches being done to the new eastern span of the bay bridge. this is the idea of what it will look like driving on to the bridge from the oakland side. caltrans says it has a lot of work left to do. crews have to finish painting the stripes for lanes. test the electronic warning signs, make final adjustments on the suspender system and one more big job. >> they're going to be demolishing a section of the original westbound approach of the bridge. that's the only demolition that's taking place that weekend and that is so that they can connect in the temporary connector for the bike path. caltrans says steel which i says -- steel shims are expected to be removed when the

permanent nix comes in. that will happen in september. santa clara county officially has a new supervisor tonight. cindy chavez took the oath of office in san jose. congresswoman zo lofkrin did the honors of delivering the oath. san francisco is taking the lead in a class action lawsuit accusing nevada of dumping hundreds of poor and mentally ill patients here in california. city attorney dennis he re -- herr era alleges that over the last five years, 500 patients from las vegas were given one way bus tickets to california. herr era is sending a letter to nevada officials warning them that he intends to file the lawsuit on behalf of hundred of

california medical centers. and a jury delivers the fate of naso. naso is found guilty of four counts of first degree murder. >> reporter: the 79-year-old man in a suit and tie may not look like a serial killer but a jury decided the evidence against joseph naso proves over wise. while - - otherwise. while there were no cameras allowed in the courtroom, the brother of a victim was in the courtroom to hear the sentence, guilty. his sister was just 19 when her body was found in 19 # seven. her murder along with those of three other northern california women remained unsolved until 2010. that's when a routine rotation search of naso's search in reno turned up photographs and writings including a list of women and locations each of the

four victims had matching first and last initials. dna on roxanne's panty hose was that of naso. >> it won't help. that man is dead and gone. he's a waste of life right now. he's taken too many lives. not just my sisters, there's a lot of victims here too. >> reporter: he says he knew the victims who were prostitutes but did not kill them. the jury of six men and six women didn't buy it. larry rogan says he has a final request for the man who killed his sister. >> the only thing i would want him to do is probably give up the low kaeugs -- locations of the other victims that are out there. this man never stopped killing. >> reporter: joseph naso is in his cell. the jury will begin the process of deciding whether he should receive the death penalty next

mall on alam rock between now. it's located inside a strip capital avenue. and you found out this location has a history of violence. >> reporter: frank, that's true. i will get to that in a moment. two security guards came out here, they basically walked around the building they had flashlights checking out the entire scene. they did not want to speak on camera but they said that they did not work here last night when the shooting occurred. we counted at least five bullet holes in the building of this vietnamese restaurant. around 10:00 last night, one or more people fired several shots into the restaurant. >> first time my neighbor now this one. >> reporter: john poval lives a lives -- lives across the street from the shooting. >> a few yearing as -- a few years ago, my neighbor. >> reporter: a place that some people say is more than a restaurant. >> it's basically a bikini bar.

its doors. the unionized and worker owned lusty lady says it will shut down in two weeks. the general manager says the rent is almost $17,000 a month and the club can only afford to pay about half of that. workers tell ktvu it is very sad and intend to throw a large party. the club opened in 1996. workers at the lusty lady formed the exotic dancers union, the first in the country. contra costa county supervisor john jolla tells us, the goal would be to ensure doctors medical center survives. the latest ktvu field poll

shows most californians are optimistic about the new health act. just 25% of voters under 65 say they've heard about it or have some knowledge of it. and 48% of low income voters know they are eligible to get free coverage next year under an expanded medical program. pressure is increasing on san diego mayor bob philner to resign. now the democratic national committee plans to vote on a resolution this week asking him to step down and if he does not the committee is asking the residents of san diego to recall him. a signature drive is already under way. philner has resist all calls so far to resign. in news of the world tonight in egypt the military polls back show a force in the streets of cairo and why some returned to work after weeks of

meningitis. he was hospitalized and has since recovered and returned home. county vector control officials also have confirmed the first dead bird that has tested positive for west nile. in santa clara county, vector control officials plan to spray parts of san jose. the area is between berriesa road, north jackson avenue and moral avenue. the fogging is set to begin at 11:00 p.m. weather permitting. v ector confirms they will answer any questions tomorrow. and doctors issued what could become a five step program to save lives by controlling blood pressure. almost 1/3 of americans suffer from blood pressure it is a leading cause of stroke and heart disease. kaiser put 600,000 people on an innovative program and monitor them over an eight year period.

a shark warning is up tonight at steinson beach in marin county after a great white shark was spotted just offshore. the beach is open but the water at steinson is now off limits to all swimmers and surfers. rob roth tonight on what may have attracted the great white. >> at steinson beach the water's edge is as far as surfers and swimmers are allowed these days. the sharks are out, shark warning. a life guard spotted a 10 to 15 feet great white shark yesterday afternoon coming from within 50 feet of shore say state officials. this is the same area where a young thin whale beached and then died. >> it's not to be discounted all together but my guess is we see white sharks near shore in that area every year. and we don't have fin whales or
